Although Spumante, also known as sparkling wine, is produced in many different countries, the original comes from Italy, in particular from the regions of Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia and Veneto. There are many different types of this sparkling white wine known as Spumante such as Franciacorta, Asti, Lambrusco and Prosecco and, while some of them are produced using a traditional method, some of them use the more recent Charmat method.

The vine and wine-making

Just like there are different types of Spumante, there are also different ways of making this kind of wine. One of the processes involves injecting the wine with carbon dioxide, just like they do with soft drinks. Another one of the methods includes a second fermentation process which takes place in bulk tanks, which is later bottled under pressure.
The third method consists of fermenting the wine in a bottle while the fourth method, known as transfer method, where the wine is fermented in bottles only to then be transfered to a large tank after spending some time on yeast.

Organoleptic properties

As it has been mentioned previously, there are many different types of Spumante, but most of them have very similar organoleptic properties. Most types of Spumante, in fact, are straw-yellow and have some bright highlights. When it comes to the flavor of this popular type of white sparkling wine, most varieties can be described as subtle and delicate thanks to their flowery and fruity taste which is also fresh while very elegant and persistent.

Serving suggestions

Since there are so many varieties of Spumante, you can be sure to find an ideal one for almost any type of meal. A light Spumante is perfect for aperitifs as well as appetizers made mostly of fish. A perfect type of Spumante if you are planning on serving roast meat is Franciacorta. But there are certain foods in particular such as caviar, Parmesan and salmon which can be perfectly suited to having with a glass of Spumante. Something you should never do is have any type of sweets while also having a glass of Spumante because you might end up missing out on the best of both.
